NewCo New York

Ramblings and thoughts from my first NewCo experience.

If you aren't familiar with NewCo, it's an interesting "conference" that gives attendees a behind-the-scenes look at some of the most innovative companies in their city. I was really looking forward to the chance to get an inside look at how some of these young companies were building their ideas into real businesses and how they continue the culture of innovation.

I met some really amazing people and companies (some of whom I will introduce you to later) but I made what I imagine to be somewhat of a rookie mistake... I tried to see as many companies as I possibly could in two days. Uber or not, there was just no way I was going to get from Dumbo to Midtown in under 30 minutes. Regardless, I had an amazing time and did get to almost 10 different companies, three of which I was really impressed by and I want to introduce you to right now.

The first session I went to was hosted by Jonathan Cedar (pictured above), one of the founders of a novel product company dedicated to bringing energy everywhere. What does that mean exactly? Did you know that half the planet cooks on smoky open fires which ledes to 4 million premature deaths a year? Yeah, me either. One of BioLite's flagship products, the HomeStove, reduces smoke by 90% with only half the wood. For the campers out there, they make a smaller version that gives you ability to cook your food and, like the larger stove, create electricity you can then use to charge your phone or some lights for some late night reading.

Later that same day I visited the offices of onefinestay which, at first glance, I figured was just a luxury version of Airbnb but boy was I wrong. Evan Frank, the co-founder & president of the Americas division was our guide and he very quickly showed me the error in my ways. onefinestay is more like a curated collection of homes each with their own unique story and the level of service you would expect with a fine hotel.

Looking to really experience Paris, London or New York? Give a look.

Mack Weldon

Change your underwear. That's usually something only my mother would tell me, but for Michael Isaacman and the rest of the fine folks over at Mack Weldon, it's practically their mission statement. They saw a void in the underwear market for a premium better fitting product and, if you ask me next week after my first pair arrives, I'll be sure to let you know if they hit their mark.

There were a lot of other companies and interesting people I had the privilege to interact with and I hope to see them and make some new friends at the next NewCo New York. So until next time, I will leave you with a little joke my 6 year old loves to tell, "What's that under there? ... I just made you say underwear."

Cool stuff Doug. Being a native New Yorker I could have told you the challenges with booking too many company visits. Thanks, Jay
